The divorce process exists in a continuum—events, feelings, and decisions precede the divorce and will go on after the divorce is final. It may be helpful to consider particular issues before the decision to dissolve the marriage is made. Such considerations as communication, counseling, mediation, and the possibility of a legal separation can shape not only the divorce decision itself but also how to proceed once a petition is filed.
Similarly, after a final judgment of dissolution is entered, there may be ongoing communication issues, the need to modify the judgment if circumstances change, or other concerns that the dissolution itself doesn’t resolve fully.
